A team of researchers from SGH Warsaw School of Economics and AGH University of Kraków has published AI-Driven Sustainable Human Resource Management: Opportunities and Challenges with Edward Elgar Publishing, examining how artificial intelligence can help organizations build HR practices that are both effective and responsible.

The book examines how organizations can respond to two major shifts occurring at once: the growing use of AI in the workplace and the need to operate more sustainably. It looks at how these forces intersect across core HR functions, from recruitment to compensation, while keeping employee well-being, ethics, and social responsibility at the center. The authors connect their analysis to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, treating AI not as an end in itself but as a driver that, used responsibly and consciously, can support long-term economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

As AI takes on a larger role in HR, moving beyond administrative tasks into more strategic functions, organizations must weigh real benefits against equally real risks. This book offers a structured look at how that balance can be achieved.

The volume is organized into four parts:

AI in core HR processes: how AI supports recruitment, onboarding, learning and development, and compensation, including its role in improving pay fairness in line with European legal standards.

Social sustainability, well-being, and DEI: how AI can support diversity, equity, and inclusion through tools such as skill-based matching and pay equity audits, alongside a candid discussion of risks including algorithmic bias, data privacy, and limited transparency in AI decision-making.

Green HRM and environmental impact: a framework for using AI to track sustainable employee behaviors, align HR data with ESG metrics, and encourage environmentally conscious practices beyond the workplace.

Human-Centered Governance: an argument for treating AI as support to human judgment rather than a replacement for it, with an emphasis on oversight, ethics, and transparency.

Combining academic research with practical guidance, the book is intended for researchers, HR practitioners, and policymakers interested in the responsible use of technology in HR.
